Behavioural change in the mobility of European citizens
USEmobility (full name: Understanding Social behaviour for Eco-friendly multimodal mobility) is a project supported by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission.
The scope of USEmobility comprises two main topics: What reasons actually lead to a change in preferences for certain modes of transport? What conclusions can be drawn from this for the benefit of sustainable future strategies for transport suppliers and politics?
USEmobility chooses a new approach to directly identify the real reasons for behavioural change in the choice of transport and the future potential for eco-friendly mobility. Ten regions will be chosen in five European countries to identify trends and best practices towards successful public multimodal mobility.
The concept of USEmobility is to interview citizens who already have changed their personal preference regarding transport alternatives. We want to learn from their experience how to better adapt the transport services being offered and the framework for transport solutions to customers´ needs throughout Europe. The reference to actual changes (and not just intentions) is a novelty.
From monomodal car-traffic to multimodal transport-chains
Citizens will be interviewed who have actually switched from monomodal car travel to multimodal transportation chains (incl. public transportation) or who have increased their share of multimodal transportation. It will also include citizens who, on the contrary, have had their experience with multimodal transportation, but now rely more on monomodal transportation.
The area of investigation is local and regional transport used by most citizens for their daily travel and offers a range of possibilities for multimodal transport / changing of transport modes.
Target-groups of the USEmobility project: Citizens, politicians, civil society organisations and providers of transport services.
The influence of different factors on the choice of the preferred transport mode will be investigated. This includes so called “hard factors”, like for example structural or technological factors, but also “soft factors” like perception, the individual (and often subconscious) mental attitude, the social status of certain modes of transport etc. These factors will be interpreted in combination with the socio-economic / socio-demographic status of the passengers and their environmental awareness.
Based on the results of the analysis a measure-mix will be suggested for the medium- and long term to better adapt the transport services being offered and the framework conditions in general to the customers´ needs. USEmobility will elaborate future scenarios for eco-friendly multimodal mobility and discuss them with decision makers in politics and transportation companies and also with civil society organisations (CSOs), representing European citizens / passengers. Finally, strategic recommendations for future eco-friendly multimodal mobility will be elaborated for national target groups and also for the European Commission.
The USEmobility consortium consists of seven partners in five European countries:
